Chapter 12. Summary
Inadequate timing may produce problems in any digital network. Five
questions need to be answered:
- Where and what are the network's source, or sources of timing?
- What will happen if there are slips?
- Are slips a problem today?
- What future network growth is planned, and will errors due to slips be an
increasing problem?
- Will new equipment force a redesign of my synchronization network?
Once answered, objectives need to be set:
- The number of frame slips per day/month/year to be allowed under impaired
network conditions
- The timing sources available from the carrier or local telephone company to
help solve the problem
- The degree of redundancy required
- The locations of the timing systems, and the Stratum levels desired
- The management and maintenance of the system
